Arriving in Quito

Fly into Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), about 45–60 minutes from Old Town depending on traffic. Official airport taxis are typically about $26 to central Quito, and the airport express bus is about $8.

☀️ Weather
March is part of the wet season. Expect cool mornings and evenings, possible rain, strong high-altitude sun, and temperatures around 50–69°F. Pack layers and a light rain jacket, and bring SPF 30+ sunscreen — UV is intense at altitude even on cloudy days.
💵 Currency
Ecuador uses the U.S. Dollar. Small bills are helpful for taxis, markets, and tips. At sit-down restaurants, tip about 10% if it isn't already on the bill.
🧭 Safety
Use official taxis or trusted ride-share options, keep valuables close in busy areas, and take normal big-city precautions in Old Town.

TelefériQo cable car

Cable car climbs to about 3,945 m for sweeping city and Andes views; round-trip about $8.50. Go early before clouds.

Galápagos · Cuenca · Amazon

Multi-day add-ons. Galápagos and Cuenca need domestic flights; the Amazon is reached via Coca. Build in extra time and check vaccine guidance for the jungle.

Health & well-being

No special vaccines are required for Quito itself. Yellow fever vaccine is recommended if extending to the Amazon and required by some countries on re-entry. Drink bottled or filtered water (hotels usually provide it), pack SPF 30+ and a hat for the intense high-altitude sun, and give your body 24–48 hours to acclimate before strenuous activities. Pharmacies ("farmacias") are common throughout Quito for over-the-counter needs.

Staying connected

Several easy options for data and calls while you're in Ecuador.

US carrier roaming

T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T plans typically include Ecuador data, though speeds may be slower than at home. Verify your plan before flying.
